Shadow of the Tomb Raider was released earlier this fall, and in it, fans got to play once again as Lara Croft. Developers Square Enix and Eidos-Montréal haven’t stopped at Lara’s adventures in South America, however. Today, November 13, the first of seven monthly DLC releases will be available. This one is called The Forge, and SYFY FANGRRLS had a chance to check it out at a hands-on preview event.

You can play The Forge alone or in co-op mode. We played the challenge tomb part in co-op mode with Edios associate producer Jonathan Dahan, who explained that each of the DLC releases will give us a look at some backstory in the game. In this one, players follow the further story of Abby, who we met in the village back in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The objective is to solve the mystery of Abby's character and discover the village's true origins.

More Shadow of the Tomb Raider

In co-op mode, you must work together to solve the puzzle of the tower in the middle of a cave. Now, you can try to do this yourself, and you may even succeed, but Dahan told us that you can’t actually do the end part of the puzzle if your partner disappears. If you try it solo, there are a few things you won’t be able to see, so it’s worth trying it both ways. The entire DLC gives you an extra side mission, a new weapon, a new outfit, and a new skill. You can preview more behind-the-scenes info in the video below.

The puzzle will feel familiar to players who have already tackled Shadow of the Tomb Raider's main story mode, but we were told that the developers wanted to take their time here in ways that they couldn’t during the first narrative. The challenge tomb here has a tower with seven levels. Co-op teams must work together to move the rotating platforms up to the top of the tower, using arrows and timing, and pulling down ladders. The platforms lock every two levels, so you’ll have moments to rest and regroup. We played next to each other, so we could see both screens, but each player will see themselves individually as Lara. The developers also added arrows to show you where each lever is located, so you don’t necessarily have to try to explain that step you want your partner to do over a headset. Pro tip: Make sure you have a bunch of fire arrows ready to go before you start so you don’t have to keep crafting them on the fly like we did.

Dahan told us that they’ve been working on the DLC for some time, getting ideas from the main narrative about parts of the story that they and fans would like to see more of. They started this back in July, and as of now are pretty far into the second DLC release. The third DLC is partially done as they wait from more feedback from players to determine what eventually gets released.

You do get a pretty cool prize for completing The Forge. If you solve the tower puzzle, you’ll get the “Grenadier" ability to craft grenades, something that will really help you out when dealing with multiple enemies.

Developed by Eidos Montréal in conjunction with Crystal Dynamics, Shadow of the Tomb Raider was released on September 14 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC/Steam. Are you guys excited for the upcoming release of The Forge? Have you been playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider? Let us know in the comments or tweet us @SYFYFangrrls.

Archaeologist might be the headline of her LinkedIn page, but Lara Croft also happens to be a merciless killing machine.

After making this transition with with slightly comical ease in the first game, she’s now at the point where all-out slaughter is second nature right from the off. In Shadow, the aim is to become one with the jungle, heightening your senses in combat to open up more tactical options.

As you progress through the game you’ll gradually unlock upgrades in three skill categories: Seeker, Scavenger and Warrior. Some are more exploration-based (breathe underwater for longer, take less damage from a fall, climb faster, increase the likelihood of finding a wild animal that may well try to eat you etc.), while others help you take out the bad guys.

Buff up your Perception skill, for example, and you’ll be able to temporarily sense the presence of Trinity bods even when you don’t have a direct visual. The Jaguar’s Fear perk lets you craft fear arrows that turn enemies against their own, while another lets you string them up on a tree branch.

If you’ve played either of the games in the trilogy you’ll settle back into the familiar combat loop in no time. Skulking through the long grass stealthily picking off you prey with arrows and gruesome knife attacks tends to be the best strategy. Covering yourself in mud makes you even more difficult to detect, and you can now cling to vine-covered walls in preparation for a surprise attack.

When it inevitably goes pear-shaped and turns into a gunfight, Lara can craft molotov cocktails in a matter of seconds and headshot her way through swarms of mercs with ease.

Each weapon is upgradeable, but none of them feel rock solid, and last ditch melee craps aren’t particularly satisfying. Stick to stealth for as long as the game lets you and you’ll have more fun, and when the time comes to unload, aim for the stuff that explodes.

There are some brilliant fights throughout the game, and feeling like a near super-powered jungle warrior never gets boring, but I thought the final boss battle was a pretty uninspired run ’n’ gun sequence that felt like more of a chore to get through than the culmination of an epic adventure.

In the Shadow of Tomb Raider, Lara Croft will be utilizing variety of arsenals from Bow, VIPER BITE BOW, Enable You To Fire Poison Arrows.

Here we are. A few days after the reveal of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Square Enix has gifted us with a very thorough cosplay gear guide. As you can see in the images below, there are quite a lot of details, including the texture and feel of several fabrics and materials.

The whole outfit looks much more technical to me, mostly because of the very specific fabric hints we got. Lots of fine details everywhere and an incredible amount of small props. But in the meantime, I feel like it would be pretty easy for beginners to complete a rather accurate version since most of the stuff can be bought online : boots,  holster, pistol, walkie talkie, gloves, even the pants should be pretty easy to mod. Speaking of gloves, Lara Croft will finally be wearing her iconic fingerless ones. So without a doubt, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is closing the gap between this trilogy and the following episodes (Tomb Raider I and so on).

Some props will be pretty challenging to craft. I immediately think about the bow, which seems to feature macramé sewings. Something I never delved  into before. The (now) legendary iceaxe is back too, with a slightly different weathering that i’ll be including in my future listings. By the way, the iceaxes I made for the London, Montreal and Los Angles reveals last week were already sporting some small imporvements, including a more realistic-looking blades. They look much more like real steel rather than silver paint.

Also, keep in mind that the quiver and knife will not be the only ones features in this game. So far, this guide is only about one outfit. But we know for a fact that there is another quiver, and the old tactical knife has been spotted too. So I would very likely expect several outfits, and several tiered weapons, just like we saw in the previous games, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider Reborn.

You can download the whole gear guide here. You can also download a fully detailed pattern guide for the top.

How to Craft Arrows in Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is back at it again with the tomb raiding action. Lara Croft returns with her signature weapons, among them, a bow and its arrows! You’re going to be going through these arrows a lot, trust me. Especially if you’re planning on playing with an inclination towards stealth. As such, you’re probably wondering how the heck you can make more arrows. Here’s how to craft arrows in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The game makes this incredibly easy to do, you just need to have the crafting materials to do so. If you don’t, by the way, the game will definitely let you know. Feathers and wood are a big part of the ingredients you’ll need, so get to pickin’ and foraging.

To craft arrows, you simply need to hold R2 if you’re on PS4 or RT if you’re on Xbox One. You’ll see a little symbol filling up. Once it’s full, you’ll have some more arrows! Just keep doing that and you’ll have replenished your ammo yourself.

Now, if you’d rather make fire arrows, you can do that by holding R1 (PS4) or RB (Xbox One), instead! Rinse and repeat, wait for the symbol to fill up, and boom, you have new arrows on the go.

Don’t forget what I said before; you definitely need the materials to pull this off. That’s why it’s always smart to be collecting as you come across branches and feathers.

That’s all you have to do, though. That’s how you craft arrows in Shadow of the Tomb Raider be they regular wooden arrows or fire arrows. If you need more help with the game, we have a massive wiki that’s constantly getting updated over here. If you’d rather ask us, you most certainly can!
