Fusion core

“What you'll need is an old pre-war F.C., a standardized Fusion Core. Your high-grade, long-term nuclear battery. Used by the military and some companies, way back when.”— Preston Garvey

The fusion core is a type of ammunition in Fallout 4.

Standardized fusion cores are a high-grade, long-term nuclear battery used for military and commercial applications before the Great War.[1] Used by civilians to power a multitude of devices, from automobiles,[2] to generators,[3] the military instead used them for warfare, supplying power armor and some Gatling laser models with energy. Standard core interfaces were developed across the board to allow for power armor frames to use cores salvaged from weapons or generators.[4] The fusion core also can be hooked up to certain melee weapons via jumper cables.[5]

Another benefit is that cores can be set to overload, for use as improvised explosives or to deny a power armor suit to the enemy by destroying it.[6]

Fusion cores are used to power and activate suits of power armor. Each core provides roughly twenty minutes real time (or approximately 10 hours game time) of power armor use when jogging (default pace). Actions based on Action Points (AP) usage, such as holding breath when using scoped weapons, sprinting, utilizing V.A.T.S., or jet pack modules causes the power to drain much faster, whereas walking consumes less power and remaining stationary drains none. While the Sole Survivor can utilize power armor without a fusion core, they will be unable to move at a pace greater than a slow walk (similar to being overencumbered) and actions requiring AP will be restricted.

Fusion core lifespan is represented as a percentage. Fusion core lifespan can be extended by 10% by collecting the Repair bobblehead, and by up to 100% by investing points in the Nuclear Physicist perk. Instead of increasing the maximum charge percentage, these will slow the rate at which the charge level drains.

The Gatling laser utilizes fusion cores as its ammunition, each core providing 500 shots. Nuclear Physicist can increase the number of shots per core up to 1000, but the magazine capacity will remain at 500. Also combining with Repair bobblehead, the total amount of shots can be raised to 1100.

Fusion cores can also be ejected from power armor suits if one has the highest level Nuclear Physicist perk and no other explosive devices are currently equipped. Ejected cores land a short distance behind the user where they act as a sort of timed mine with a destructive force similar to that of a Fat Man'sprojectile. Note that contrary to the perk description, the cores cannot be actually thrown like regular grenades.

Fusion cores glow when they suffer critical damage and eventually erupt in a small but powerful nuclear detonation.

The core of a worn suit of power armor may be targeted using V.A.T.S. A successful hit will cause the core to suffer critical damage, causing a small nuclear explosion behind them, forcing the character wearing to armor to exit it.

In addition to fixed locations below, fusion cores may also spawn in groups of four in certain ammo boxes across the Commonwealth. Cores can also be spawned in other container types by means of an eyebot pod, but only one at a time.

Can you make fusion cores?
There are several Mods that can make them. I know Freecrafter does.

No, in the vanilla game you cannot craft or "charge" Fusion Cores but that is hardly an issue as they are quite plentiful.

How to get the Jetpack Mod in Fallout 4

Want to soar around the wasteland like Iron Man with a jetpack in a full suit of power armor? It's a substantial cost in fusion cores to do it, but can be a lot of fun.

Step 1) Get to level 41
You'll need to be at least level 41 in order to apply this mod to your favorite suit of power armor. This is because you need to have four ranks in science in order to craft this mod, which requires you to be level 41. You'll also need to be rank 4 in armorer, but this can be done prior to level 41.

Step 2) Head to a crafting station.
Park your favorite suit of power armor near a crafting station and access the crafting menu to get to work on this. Select the chest armor and find the jetpack under 'misc mods'. This will tell you what you need to craft this, which is 7 adhesive, 10 aluminum, 9 asbestos, and 12 nuclear material. If you have all of these then select craft and you'll have outfitting your power armor with the jet pack.

Step 3) Learn to fly!
Take your modded power armor out for a spin and try to jump in it. The more you press the jump key, the more you will fire the thrusters of the power armor to fly.

That's it! Have fun soaring around the commonwealth.

How to Get Fusion Cores in Fallout 76

Fusion Cores are one of the most sought-after items in Fallout 76, just as they likely were when you were exploring the wasteland back in Fallout 4. To give you a helping hand in tracking down Fusion Cores and exactly why you’ll want to pick up every last one you can find, we’ve broken down how to get them free, fast, and easily in Fallout 76.

Why Fusion Cores Are Important

Fusion Cores are so sought after in Fallout 76 because they’ll power your Power Armor. Without one, you won’t gain any of the benefits of wearing your power armor. As such, they tend to fetch a rather high price at the vendors in the game, and other players will likely try and rip you off a little if you try and trade with them.

Fortunately, you’re not stuck with just having to pay over the odds for these handy items in Fallout 76. We’ve broken down three different ways you can get them for free in the game.

All the Ways to Get Fusion Cores for Free in Fallout 76

If you’re looking for a quick list of ways to get Fusion Cores for free in Fallout 76 without our more detailed explanation of each, you can check the list below.

  • Searching Power Armor
  • Looking out for certain machinery
  • Poseidon Energy Plant Event

Searching Power Armor

The first of which is to simply track down one of the Power Armor locations in the game and check that it doesn’t already have a Fusion Core inside it. If it does, and you’re not interested in the Power Armor frame or armor, simply transfer it out of the frame and into your inventory.

Keep in mind that those you find within Power Armor or other machinery around the world (more on those in a second), might not be fully charged. You can check how much power is left in them by accessing your inventory, heading to the Items section, and looking at the ‘CND’ bar when you’ve got the Fusion Core selected. The more full it is, the more charge you’ve got left.

Look Out for These Yellow Panels on Machinery

Honestly, we’re not entirely sure what these machines are called, but if you ever see one of the yellow panels on one, go ahead and check it out. They won’t always contain a core, but more often than not from our experience, they do.

Just as we mentioned above, however, the charge on Fusion Cores found within machines like this will vary. We’ve never pulled one out that’s been pretty much empty, but if you want to get yourself an abundance of Fusion Cores that are nicely charged, check out our final point.

Poseidon Energy Plant Event & Fusion Core Generator

You may have noticed that Fallout 76 has a number of events going on pretty much all the time. They task you with doing all kinds of different things such as guiding an NPC to their destination, fighting off waves of creatures, quelling a protest, and in the case of Poseidon Energy Plant, repairing its many different parts.

Doing so will result in you being able to turn on the Poseidon Energy Plant itself. You’ll get some rewards for your hard work, but it’s more what completing this event powers up that’s of interest here.

Upon completing the event, you’ll want to head to the Poseidon Energy Plant Yard, located nearby. Here, you’ll need to be able to claim the workshop, and then you can unlock a miscellaneous quest that tasks you to ‘Power up the Fusion Core Processor at Poseidon Energy Plant Yard.’

Make sure you build up some defenses here, as the game will throw waves of enemies at you, and other players are likely going to want to claim this for themselves.

Follow the marker of this miscellaneous quest to seek out the actual Fusion Core generator itself. It requires 100 Power in order to actually work, but then generates a core every 10 minutes or so passively once it’s up and running. You don’t have to do anything else here, but you might want to stay in the vicinity unless your defenses really are sublime in order to make sure other players don’t try and claim it for themselves.

You can check out MixelPlx’s video above, should you want a video rundown of the Poseidon Energy Plant and the Fusion Core Processor itself.

That’s all you need to know to get Fusion Cores fast and easy in Fallout 76. For more tips, tricks, and guides to survive the West Virginia wasteland, be sure to check out our ever-expanding Fallout 76 guide wiki.
