Our reuse & recycle series is back with a 3rd edition, offering 6 creative DIY ideas to reuse pistachio shells.
I go nuts with some nuts like pistachios! Now don’t get me wrong, I love the flavour of pistachios and love to have them just like that or in icecream, kulfi, milkshake, chocolate, chikki bar, dry fruit laddoo, salted, roasted and many other forms. Just thinking about having pistachios in different forms is prompting me to write more about them, but that post is for another day.
So coming to the point, what drives me crazy is getting that nut out of its shell. I always end up having a pack of nuts lying in my refrigerator that are hard to shell. I can neither throw them nor use them.
For those who are struggling with the same issue, do check out the below video for a simple trick to shell those hard to open nuts!
Of course after shelling all of them and eating, I still end up with a pack! Wondering what I am speaking about now? It is a pack of pistachio shells this time.
Being a person who doesn’t like to waste any resource so easily, those shells always looked lovely to my eyes. Hoping that I would use them in some form I would always store the shells, but would not really be sure what to do with them. When I had a whole lot of them, cluttering up space, I finally did part with them with a heavy heart!
Until one day, when my son got a craft made at his school for mother’s day. Though it looked very simple, it actually occurred to me that I should be doing something like this with those shells. Here is a photograph of the mother’s day craft.
So yes the shells are quite sturdy, durable and have a lovely shape. They can be used for making different crafts. Let us check out some DIY options now.
Making a flower with pista shells is the most common method of reusing the shells to make crafts. As the shells already come with an almost petal shape, it is easy to identify them as flower petals. These will come in handy when natural flowers are not available and you want to make them part of your rangoli!
Yes, it is possible to craft some elegant jewelry too with the shells! You can make pendants or add them as mini pins to your tops. Be ready to experiment with different shapes and colours that suit best for your outfits.
Fancy a bowl with pistachio shells? That is possible too! The bowl turns out to be quite sturdy and you can use it as an organizer basket to store small items or place just the bowl anywhere to act as a décor piece.
The kind of coaster that is shown in the video is a people coaster but you can bring forth your creativity to try out other designs. Go ahead and recycle all those old, boring and plain coasters and bring them to life!
This candle holder is very similar to making a complete flower with pistachio shells. The only difference is to leave space to place your tea light candle in the middle and not to cover it with shells. Follow the video for a clear tutorial.
Other stuff that you can do with these shells is to make some wall hangings with an abstract floral art. Try different sized flowers and other figures of personal interest and stick them to a base to make the hanging. Here is a video to get you started.

Winter is here & dry fruits-nuts are in full swing! What’s yours favorite by the way? I love pistachios more than any other nuts or dry fruit. I am in a habit of saving pistachio shells for using those in random crafts & things. You may remember my vase which I decorated with pistachio shells. I gifted one pistachio vase decorated with collage clay to a friend recently. Today I will be sharing another idea which I have done with pistachio shells & collage clay! I hope you will like to see how to make Pistachio Shell Art and Craft. Have a look here,
This is a coaster I made, But can be used as a paper weight or table decoration piece. It’s making is very simple and fun!
First of all, Fill the lid of any jar with collage clay. Spread it with any stick. I used ice cream stick.
Start fixing pistachio shells from the middle & fix it.
Complete the circle by fixing these one by one.
Add some glitter & pearl beads.
Let it dry overnight.
Here is the other side :) Some bubbles are here but you can cover this with any sticker. I let it as it is. It’s not looking bad I guess.
It’s done. And seriously it looks too good at my blue table surface. As I am already having a paper weight for my table, So this one is not in my use. I might be giving away this decoration piece item.
I hope you enjoyed my today’s fun idea. It’s very easy craft & looks cute. I am sure if you will be trying this, You will love it. If you don’t have collage clay, You can also try this with homemade dough/clay. Simply fill the space with a layer of dough/clay & fix pistachios on it. Find tutorial of my homemade clay/dough HERE.
Have a great day!

Pistachio Flower: We all know pistachios to be tasty little green nuts but how many can say they have known them to be a fun craft? This is a really awesome.
First of all cut out a small shape as shown from the cardboard.
Make two holes on both ends of it using any sharp object. Attach it to the chain using these holes as you see here.
Apply glue all over the piece. Stick the shells one by one to this cardboard piece. Let it dry well. Now it is the time to paint it.
Start from the bottom layer.
Here I am using different shades of pink. Apply purple shade on the bottom layer,
on top of that apply dark pink, then normal pink and finally very light pink.
Let it dry. See, we have made a beautiful pendant. It looks costly too, doesn't it?
Today we are going to learn how to make Incense Holder with Pistachio shells (Pista shells). This is a great DIY from waste materials and looks great as a home décor.
If you have ever wondered what to do with Pista shells then this easy craft is for you.
Burning incense is very relaxing and my favorite are the “Padmini Dhoop sticks”.
Incense sticks are a part of the Indian heritage and are associated with spirituality. That’s the reason most of the Indian Hindu household has it burning in the prayer room.
All these days I have been burning them in the small metal eyelet that is designed to hold the stick on the Padmini dhoop sticks box.
But now I have this cutest custom incense stick holder and it is the easiest and most practical thing to do out of waste 🙂. This is really a fun idea, you can try at your home.
Yep these are pistachio shells upcycled to make a pretty floral incense burner <3.

Pista shells
Glue gun
Cardboard for base
Air dry clay
Spray paint
Step 1 : Take a sturdy cardboard as a base. Here I have used the base of empty salt carton.
Step 2: Start from the outer layer. Glue the Pista shells upside down to the cardboard circle
Step 3: Glue the second layer. Use a dab of hot glue to the pista shell and stick it on to the cardboard like shown below
Step 4: Continue to glue all shells towards the center.
Step 5: Fill the center with a piece of air dry clay and create a hole with the incense stick.
Step 6: Leave the clay to dry for couple of hours and use spray paint of your choice and you have the incense holder ready to use 🙂
Pretty, Isn’t it !! These make cute home decor or handmade Diwali gifts to friends and family.
