Give your Gymnastics Doll some fun new accessories with this easy American Girl Doll Craft for a DIY Gymnastics Ribbon!

Following is a fun Craft for Kids and guest post by
KC at The Real Thing with The Coake Family… enjoy!!

American Girl Doll Craft – Gymnastics Ribbon

I don’t know about your house, but at my house, we love making American Girl Crafts. We have lots of fun with our dolls and love to find inexpensive ways to play and have fun with our dolls.

Today, I’m going to show you an American Girl Doll Craft tutorial to make your own gymnastic ribbon for your doll. It is an easy and inexpensive craft that any American Girl Doll and/or gymnastic fan will love.

American Girl Doll Gymnastics Ribbon – Supplies Needed:

  • Dowel rod cut into 3.25″ lengths
  • Ribbon – You will need one 28″ length and one 21″ length of ribbon for each completed craft (You may need less than 21″ depending on the width of your ribbon.)
  • Hair elastics – one per completed gymnastic ribbon
  • Hot glue gun

I got this cute idea from Sew Crafty Mommy and modified it a tiny bit.

Start with your 3.25″ dowel rod and the 28″ length of ribbon. Glue the ribbon using your hot glue gun. You will want to glue the top as well as both sides of the ribbon.

You may find it helpful to glue the entire long side of the ribbon to the dowel rod, that way it won’t twist up or be awkward while you are gluing the other ribbon to the dowel rod.

Use your 21″ long ribbon and the hot glue gun. Start as close to the top of the dowel rod as you can get. Glue the ribbon. Continue winding the ribbon around the dowel rod and gluing it with the hot glue gun.

At this point only wrap a few turns around the dowel rod.

After a few turns around the dowel rod, add your hair elastic onto the ribbon. Pull the elastic up to the dowel rod. Make sure to securely glue the ribbon on either side of the elastic.

It will get pulled on quite a bit. You could also wind the ribbon around and secure it with two sections of the ribbon.

I did mine with only one section of ribbon around the hair elastic and we haven’t had any problems with ours.

After adding your hair elastic, continue hot gluing the ribbon as you wind it down the dowel rod. Make sure to glue the end very securely and trim any excess ribbon.

Easy Peasy…gymnastic ribbon is complete! I made ours with a gymnastic hoop as well. We gave them as favors for our McKenna American Girl Birthday Party.

They both turned out so cute and my girls as well as the girls who came to the party really liked them.

You can see how McKenna is able to hold the ribbon. This way she is holding it looks pretty realistic. You can also put the hair elastic around her wrist.

McKenna did a little routine for us with her hoop and her ribbon on the beam. She is such a great gymnast!

Here’s 20 American Girl DIY Ideas that you’ll be sure to love.

Do your kids have an American Girl Doll? My daughters do and we are hooked. My oldest daughter received her first American Girl Doll a few years ago for Christmas and it was a Just Like Me doll that looks exactly like her: dark skin, dark hair and dark eyes. She’s my Native American baby. My youngest received a Bitty Baby a few months later and immediately fell in love. Recently, we added the 2017 American Girl of the Year, Lea Clark and Camille Wellie Wisher to our American Girl Doll collection.

I know American Girl products can be on the pricey side but I also love the wholesome play that comes from their products and keeps my girls off our electronics. They play with their American Girl Dolls daily for several hours at a time. Heck, even I enjoy dressing them up and helping them with their dolls and getting in on the action.

If you love American Girl Dolls as much as we do, you probably try to save money on their accessories as you can. There are so many fun American Girl Doll DIY ideas and crafts on Pinterest that it can be overwhelming. Today on the blog we are sharing 20 American Girl DIY ideas. These ideas are fun and most are easy enough for even the least crafty people.

American Girl doll diy clothes and accessorizes that you can DIY

Not long ago, the American Girl doll company added a doll with disabilities and accessories like wheelchairs, crutches, and other relevant items in miniature to represent children with disabilities in their popular, ever-growing family. Barbie’s friend, Becky, uses a wheelchair, too. But why overspend on those accessories when you can save money and have fun creating them yourself?

Crafting is enjoying a resurgence these days—it’s a way for people to reconnect with an analog world that we’re losing in this information age where computers and the Internet rule the day. Ironically, many of the resources people find for crafting ideas and training are, in fact, on the Internet.

For children with disabilities, crafting can help them to connect to the world in a special way. Few, if any, dolls which could be seen as representative of people with disabilities are featured on the market, leading to self-image problems as children wonder why they can’t be like other kids, or why nobody produces toys that appeal to them.

There are, however, crafting resources out there which can help children to recapture that sense of self. YouTube channel My Froggy Stuff has produced a series of videos describing how to make various disability-related accessories for dolls. My Froggy Stuff considers themselves to be “extreme crafters,” and their projects are stunning, easy, and fun to make.

Featured here are videos for creating a doll wheelchair, crutches, and even a full hospital room. These videos require easily acquired items, many of which can be found around the house, such as duct tape, cardboard, 3-ring binders, glue, colorful card stock, old CDs or DVDs, felt, craft foam, plastic coat hangers, and other everyday items. One of the videos even includes instructions for building a doll’s wheelchair almost entirely out of paper!

The instructions are clear and simple, and while kids will need adult supervision (one video requires using sharp scissors to punch holes in plastic bottle caps, for example), they should be easy enough for most children to follow, with the help of mom or dad. The projects are innovative and clever, and should keep children invested in creating more mobility devices and play sets for their dolls. Creating these crafts offers a child with a disability dolls with accessories and play sets that mirror their own daily circumstances, and it’s an excellent way for parents and children to spend some delightful bonding time together.

My Froggy Stuff maintains a YouTube channel with the embedded videos and more, and they have an active blog, which includes how-to’s and crafting resources for boys and girls. The videos below demonstrate how to craft two different kinds of wheelchairs, crutches, and a hospital room. If you take on the crafting challenge, send us some photos of your work, and we’ll post them!
