Overview[edit | edit source]

The Water Jar is the better, although heavier, version of the Waterskin, since it does not lose any of the water it contains over time. However, on the Scorched Earth map, the Water Jar, like all water containers, will slowly lose water over time.

Uses[edit | edit source]

To drink from the Water Jar, highlight it in your inventory and select Use Item, or put it on your hotbar and press the designated key. This can be done twice for 100 water each before depletion, but only if your water isn't full.

To refill the Water Jar, use it while standing in the rain or while standing in shallow water. You can also fill it by placing it in the inventory of a Stone Irrigation Pipe - Tap or Metal Irrigation Pipe - Tap.

The Water Jar can also be used with Beer Liquid in a Beer Barrel to create a Beer Jar.

Iced[edit | edit source]

You can put a filled Water Jar into a Refrigerator or a Tek Trough and will get an Iced Water Jar after 60 seconds. Drinking from an Iced Water Jar increases your Hyperthermal insulation by 84 and decreases your hypothermal insulation by the same amount, which makes it easier to survive in the heat of Scorched Earth days, but more difficult during the cold nights. Once removed from the fridge, the Iced Water Jar will "spoil" into a normal Water Jar after 240 seconds. However, leaving it in the fridge will extend the spoil time to what equates to almost 2 real years. An Iced Water Jar can remove heatstroke and a tent can help to temporarily spare you from the heat.

When you boot up a new game in Ark: Survival Evolved, you’ll be unceremoniously dumped into the wilderness. Here’s what you need to know to survive.

With no tutorial and the clock ticking on how long it takes the environment, the wildlife, and your characters’ biological needs to kill you, you’re going to need a hand. Our tips and tricks will come in handy for survival.

Character Creation

For the most part, this is fairly straightforward.

Character customisation allows for all sorts of weird and wonderful body parts, and while short arms or legs won’t impede you, if your character is very tall, very wide, or fairly small, it will have an effect on certain aspects of gameplay, like visibility.

All characters will start out bald so don’t fret if you can’t find the hairstyle options. Hair will grow with time spent in the game.

Once you’ve got your character setup, you should choose a spawn point in the southern part of the island, which is the easiest area. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t dangerous creatures lurking nearby, so keep a weather eye out.

Heading inland will be harder and the difficulty will increase the further north you go.

If you want to know more about levelling up your character, we have a guide for that too.

Starting out

Once you drop in, your character’s hunger and thirst meters will begin to slowly deplete. You need to get food, water, and shelter fast.

Check out our Engrams guide for a more detailed breakdown of which crafting recipes you should focus on, but for now, you should get to punching trees to gather just enough wood and thatch for a Stone Pick. You’ll also need a stone which you can pick up from the ground.

There’s no point punching trees for longer than necessary as it will deplete your health.

The Stone Pick engram is already unlocked, so you can navigate straight to the crafting menu to make it.

Continue gathering materials – specifically flint – until you level up. Once you’ve decided on which stats to invest in on the character menu, you’ll be taken to the Engrams menu.

For the first few levels, you’ll receive 8 Engram Points (EP) each time you level up, but this will increase as you level up.

Focus on crafting the Stone Hatchet and the Spear for more efficient resource gathering, and to start hunting for hide and meat.

Hunger and Thirst

If the wildlife doesn’t kill you, these two will.

While you’re gathering materials and XP to unlock the Spear engram, forage berries from bushes by interacting with them with your bare hands. You can read more about resources and the best ways to gather them in our resource locations and harvesting guide.

Don’t eat Narcoberries. As the name suggests, they’ll send you to the land of nod, The berries are used in the dinosaur taming process, so they’ll come in handy eventually. Just not as a snack.

Stimberries dehydrate you, so if there isn’t a body of water nearby, you’re better off giving them a miss. The berry prevents your character from getting knocked out, so it’s worth hanging onto them for emergencies.

Once you’ve made a spear, you can go in search of something small and innocent-looking, like a dodo, and kill it. Chuck the meat into your campfire inventory, or eat it raw to satiate your hunger.

The Hatchet yields hide when used on a corpse, while the Stone Pick will give you meat.

Until you make your first kill and gather enough hide to make a Waterskin, you can stay hydrated by submerging yourself in water for a few seconds or by standing in the rain.

If you decide to go foraging further inland, a Waterskin is a must, but they slowly leak water, so you’ll want to upgrade to a Water Jar sooner rather than later.

Temperature Regulation

Running around in your underpants is going to get a bit drafty in the old nether regions, and everywhere else for that matter.

Getting too hot will dehydrate you, while getting too cold will eat into your hunger bar.

As long as you start gathering resources straight away, it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to unlock the Campfire, which will keep you nice and toasty.

If you need to venture further afield, a torch will also keep you warm. If you get too hot, find some water to take a dip in.

Eventually you can unlock engrams for armour, and you can invest points in fortitude which helps you survive adverse weather conditions. If you have plans on trying out Scorched Earth, investing points in your Fortitude stat is a must before you venture off the island.

Insulation is also important when it comes to armour and maintaining your temperature. Some armour sets will keep you cooler than others, while others will do a better job of keeping you snug.

Base Building

Building a safe haven in Ark: Survival Evolved is imperative to survival, both in PvE, and PvP.

As well as offering shelter from the elements, it’s a fortress against other players, and a stronghold to house your dinosaur army. You can check out our dinosaur taming guide when you’re ready to start amassing your scaly followers.

The search for a prime bit of real estate will take some time, so you’ll have to build a few makeshift shacks in locations that are less than ideal when you start out.

Building a simple thatch hut straight away is advisable. You can gather materials to build sturdier structures and scout for better locations as you level up and start exploring further afield.

To begin with, try to find somewhere tucked out of the way, but not too far from the south beach – which is where we recommend you spawn in.

Of course you need to be aware of the local wildlife. You’ll want some animals around for resources, but avoid areas where large and deadly creatures roam.

If you set down a structure in the wrong place, press and hold the interact button and highlight demolish.

Popping a Storage Box in your house to store resources in, and laying a sleeping bag down as a respawn point should be next on the list.

Stick to thatch until you’ve found the perfect place to settle down. By then you’ll have enough resources to build a new house made of stronger stuff straight away.

Loot Crate Beacons

As you go about life on the island, you’ll notice huge beacons of light peppering the landscape, in a variety of colours.

These are loot drops, and the colour of the beacon indicates the level required to open them.

Inside, you’ll find resources, weapons, and blueprints. The better quality items are in the higher level containers.

If you’re playing PvP, expect to fight to the death for the spoils. If the crate isn’t present at the beacon, it hasn’t yet dropped, so stand clear of the light to avoid getting hit by it.

Here’s how the colour coding works:

  • White: Level 3
  • Green: Level 15
  • Blue: Level 25
  • Purple: Level 35
  • Yellow: Level 45
  • Red: Level 60

The durability of the crate will gradually decreases. If it reaches zero before it’s been looted, it’ll fall apart.

Hotkeys

After you’ve crafted tools, you’ll naturally equip them in your hotkey bar.

When they eventually break, rather than rifling through the menu to craft it again, you can simply press the mapped button for the specific tool or weapon to immediately craft another.

This goes for whatever is in your hotkey bar – whether it’s a door, a wall, or a campfire. As long as you have the materials, you’re good to go.

Combat

Your first weapon is going to be a Spear. They’re pretty handy for keeping dinos at bay whilst you’re poking them to death, and as an added bonus, you can throw them, so it’s always best to have a few to hand.

The slingshot is ideal for ranged combat, and if you use the terrain to your advantage, you stand a good chance of taking out the more difficult enemies while you remain out of their reach.

Bolas are also handy if you’re outmatched, giving you time to make an escape, or get some serious stabbing in before the immobilisation effect wears off. Bolas are great for PvP too.

Keep an eye on your stamina bar. If it runs out, you won’t be able to run. Have some Stimberries to hand in your hotkey bar to replenish stamina, as well as food to top up your health.

Tribes

Tribes are an integral part of PvP, and if you want to thrive, you should shack up with one.

Not only will it offer you protection against rogue players and the more scary dinosaurs, but you’ll level up faster thanks to the bonus XP shared between members when carrying out activities with one another.

Tribe members share spawn points and, depending on your settings, they’ll share tamed dinos too. It’s wise to be sure of your allies before fully committing your pets to the tribe, because they won’t follow you when you leave.

Just like a regular guild, players are promoted and demoted to specific roles to assist with tribe management and other mundane team-related tasks.

Access to gates and doors can be restricted to allow certain members to pass. Or you can opt to set it to open for the entire tribe, keeping out non-members entirely.

Of course, tribes aren’t just useful for waging war on other players and building a dino army. If you’ve got your eye on taking down end-game bosses, you should buddy up.

Have you got any tips of your own for players starting out in Ark: Survival Evolved? Pop them in the comments below.

Ark Survival Evolved: XboxOne Player Dedicated Servers has members. Your one stop Crafting skill effectiveness x Crop growth A water jar.

In this post the item IDs are displayed (in a very long list) of all the items you can spawn as an administrator in ARK: Survival Evolved up to patch v232. These items can be summoned in single players as well on your own servers where you have admin rights. The items that you spawn will be put inside your inventory, so be aware that you will get heavy easily when spawning multiple structure items.

The item spawn command can be entered in the console (normally this is brought up by pressing TAB) and is as follows:

cheat GiveItemNum <itemID> <quantity> <quality> <blueprint>

The ‘cheat’ part is not needed when you are in single player, but it is not harmful if you do type it. Furthermore, the following inputs are allowed for each of the paramaters:

  • <itemID> : Here you input the itemID number which you can find in the table below.
  • <quantity> : A number between 1 and 200, representing how much of the item you want to spawn. Do remember that items stack differently and quantities can not be more than the maximum stack amount. This means that if you want to spawn 20 pistols that only stack to 1, you will only receive a single pistol even if you put in a quantity of 20. In that case you have to repeat the command 20 times in order to get the 20 pistols. Update: This no longer applies to all items, so it might happen that you will receive 20 stacks of 1 item in some cases.
  • <quality> : A number between 0 and 100 representing the quality of the item. Currently we do not know all the exact values, but 0 represents ‘primitive’ quality and 100 is ‘ascendant’. The numbers in between will therefore apply to ramshackle, apprentice, journeyman and mastercraft, however the exact boundaries are unknown (if you happen to know these, please let us know in a comment below).
  • <blueprint>: Either a 0 (no blueprint, but the item in stead) or a 1 (blueprint).

An example of spawning a single primitive Simple Pistol would for instance be:

GiveItemNum 1 1 1 0

And a single ascendant blueprint for a Simple Pistol would be:

GiveItemNum 1 1 100 1

Android & iOS App

Don’t forget that you can also use the Survive ARK Companion app for the summon commands. This is especially useful for Xbox One players as you can copy the full command (adjusted to your needs) over from the companion app! No more issues with typing them over or combining them yourself; only a single click necessary to copy it to your clipboard! Download it here from Google Play or get it on the App Store here!

Items without item ID

There are a couple of items which do not have a proper number assigned to them yet. These items are listed below with the possible number and the spawn path that you can use when the number isn’t working. Make sure you also include the double (“) and single quotes (‘) when inputting this in your console and be aware that copying the line might remove / replace the single quotes (so if you copied it and it doesn’t work, try adding the quotes again or type it manually). Also make sure you use the ‘GiveItem’ command instead of ‘GiveItemNum’ when you use the path.

An example of spawning the Elevator Track Base would be:

The popular interactive video game Ark: Survival Evolved was released by Studio Wildcard in August 2017. The PlayStation, XBox One and Microsoft Windows compatible game strands users on a mysterious island surrounded by ocean waters. Players in this virtual world must survive while defending themselves from hostile people and animals. Players must establish a base to defend themselves. They also can tame wild prehistoric animals. In the virtual reality game, players must build shelters and bases while defending themselves with firearms and improvised weapons. Survivors move around by foot and on the backs of tamed prehistoric beasts. They also must grow and harvest crops and craft items to help them live. In the world of Ark: Survival Evolved, color plays a major role. Structures and items can be painted a variety of colors. Even animals and people can be painted with warpaint. Players must blend and cook their own dye with items in their inventory including water, charcoal, gunpowder, sparkpowder and different combinations of berries. There are 25 different dyes that can be created in Ark: Survival Evolved.

Here is how to make dye in Ark: Survival Evolved.

What you need

  • a full water jar, canteen or waterskin
  • 2 charcoals, 1 gunpowder or 1 sparkpowder
  • berries (the amount and combinations depends on the color you are creating)
  • cooking pot or industrial cooker

How to add color to your virtual world

You will need water for each type of dye you make. Each dye requires either 2 charcoals, 1 gunpowder or 1 sparkpowder. Each dye requires different types of berries to create the chosen color of paint. Once ingredients are combined from your inventory, the mixture is cooked in a pot or industrial cooker for a certain amount of time. Each batch creates five dyes. Dyes can be used to color armor, weaponry, saddles, structures or as warpaint. When the dye is ready to apply, it can be found and highlighted in your inventory. Dye is applied with the paintbrush icon or a spray painter icon. “Dip” the paintbrush or spray painter in the dye and color the object. When using the spray painter on larger structures, you can left click on a PC or right click on the XBox One. To remove dye, use the soap icon.

Colors

Each dye requires water, either charcoal, gunpowder or sparkpowder, and a different combination of berries depending on the desired color. There are 25 possible dye colors in Ark: Survivor Evolved. Here are the ingredients for each type of dye.

Use with water and 2 charcoals:

  • Black – 15 Narcoberry
  • Blue – 15 Azulberry
  • Brown – 6 Amarberry + 3 Azulberry + 9 Tintoberry
  • Green – 9 Amarberry + 9 Azulberry
  • Orange – 9 Amarberry + 9 Tintoberry
  • Purple – 9 Azulberry + 9 Tintoberry
  • Red – 9 azulberry + 9 Tintoberry
  • White – 15 Stimberry

  • Parchment – 12 Amarberry + 6 Stimberry
  • Pink – 12 Tintoberry + 6 Stimberry
  • Royalty = 7 Azulberry + 7 Tintoberry + 4 Narcoberry

water jar ark survival evolved

If you plan to make a go of it on ARK: Survival Evolved’s island, and hope to stay alive for more than a few minutes at a time, you’ll need to get your hands dirty. Specifically, you’ll want to delve into ARK’s crafting and cooking systems, gathering resources and combining them to assemble essential tools, weapons, clothing, shelter and, of course, delicious, nourishing food. There’s a lot to take on board when it comes to cooking and crafting, however, so here are the basics to get you moving in the right direction.

For more Ark Survival Evolved advice, check out our beginner’s tips, island guide, base building guide, and Ark taming guide.

Crafting

Virtually everything in ARK that isn’t a raw material will need to be crafted before you can use it – whether that be a Water Jar, a wooden foundation to support your base, a fence to keep the undesirables out, a campfire to keep you warm and turn raw meat into delicious cooked meat, or even a saddle for your favourite angry carnivore.

Thankfully then, crafting in ARK is easy, and you’ll usually only require three basic components to craft a specific item: a suitable Engram, the relevant raw materials and, often, a special device to do the crafting in, such as the Cooking Pot or Fabricator.

Engrams

Engrams (essentially item recipes) can be learned by spending the Engram Points that you accrue each time your character levels up. It’s not quite that simple, however; you’ll also need to have met the Engram’s listed level requirement, and in some cases, will need to have learned other Engrams first. A basic Campfire, for instance, can be unlocked using 3 Engram Points, but only once you’ve reached level 2. The Cooking Pot and Industrial Grill engrams, meanwhile, both require you to have learned the Campfire first.

Beacons And Blueprints

Blueprints are similar to Engrams, but don’t need to be learned before use. Instead, you’ll find them at Beacons scattered across the island – then, once a Blueprint is in your inventory, it can be used as often as you like.

Beacons, incidentally, are long, vertical beams of light that mark an incoming cargo crate as it descends from the skies. Alongside Blueprints, cargo crates also contain other useful supplies – but you’ll need to have reached a specific level before you can open them. White beacons can only be opened if you’re Level 3 or above, green beacons require you to be level 15 and up, then it’s level 25 for blue beacons, 35 for purple beacons, 35 for yellow beacons and level 60 for red.

Higher level crates usually contain better goodies and Blueprints, with some Blueprints even letting you craft more advanced versions of standard Engram items. There are six item tiers in total – Primitive, Ramshackle, Apprentice, Journeyman, Mastercraft and Ascendant – so it pays to keep an eye out for higher-quality Blueprints. Unsurprisingly, the better an item’s class, the higher its resource cost is compared to the standard model.

Resources

Once you’ve unlocked an Engram, you can craft that item as often as you like, provided that you have the required resources on your person – or, depending on the item, in the specified crafting receptacle. Luckily, resources are plentiful on the island and will continue to spawn in exactly the same place (unless a foundation has been laid nearby).

In the early-to-mid stages of the game, the raw materials you’ll be relying on most often are: Wood, Thatch, Stone, Flint, Fibre, Metal, Oil, Crystal, Silica Pearls, Hide, Pelt, Chitin, Keratin and Feces. However, as you progress further, you’ll require more exotic resources (such as pearls) and compound resources.

The latter materials are a combination of two or more resources – sometimes raw resources, sometimes other compound resources – that will likely require a specific crafting tool to make. For instance, Sparkpowder (which can be used as a fuel source and to power the Preserving Bin) is made by combining Flint and Stone in a Mortar and Pestle.

Resource Gathering And Tools

Mastering the art of resource gathering is key to your continued survival in ARK’s hostile world. Almost everything that you’ll do on the island – from building and eating to fighting and taming – requires that you first gather the necessary materials. As such, you’ll find the going much easier if you know exactly where to find the resources you need – hence the importance of familiarising yourself with the island as soon as possible.

Before you begin gathering resources, however, you’ll need to ensure that you’re suitably equipped for the task at hand. There are all sorts of tools (and creatures) that you can use to maximise your gathering efficiency, but the essential items are a pick and hatchet – not least because they make for excellent, impromptu weapons early in the game too.

The Stone Pick is the first tool you’ll be able to make, and is crafted using 1 Stone, 1 Wood and 10 Thatch. A basic Stone Hatchet, meanwhile, requires 1 Flint, 1 Wood and 10 Thatch. You’ll need to use your bare hands to gather your initial batch of resources, of course (you can pick stones off the ground, and punch trees for wood and thatch), but once you’ve got a basic set of tools, crafting becomes a whole lot easier.

Advanced Resource Gathering

Resource gathering can be made more efficient by using specific tools to improve the yield of different materials. For instance, wood (which, unsurprisingly, is most common in forests, but can also be found as driftwood on beaches or riverbanks) is best farmed using a hatchet – hitting a tree with a pick instead tends to produce thatch. Similarly, striking a rock with a pick will usually produce flint, while a hatchet favours stone. To maximise the amount of resources you collect each time you swing a tool, however, you’ll need to improve their quality – for instance, by using a Metal Pick instead of a Stone Pick.

Most Useful Dinosaurs

For the absolute best results when resource gathering, you’ll want to employ the services of a tamed creature. Almost every dinosaur on the island has its own gathering speciality, meaning that you should strive to tame creatures that collect the resources you use most frequently. Mammoths, for instance, are unsurpassable when it comes to amassing wood, while the Doedicurus is the king of stone gatherers.

As a side note, all resources have a weight cost, meaning that you can only carry as much as your current Weight stat allows. Even if you don’t have a specialised resource-gathering creature to hand, it’s often worth taking a tamed beast (such as a Phiomia) on your foraging expeditions to use as a pack mule. This way, you’ll be able to collect and carry more resources before you’re forced to return to base and stash them away.
